Black and white is her signature aesthetic, so it was only a matter of time before Janelle Monáe accessorized her hair with googly eyes. Did you just do a double take? Let us explain.
While out in New York yesterday promoting her new film, Hidden Figures — about three black female NASA scientists whose mind-blowing story has for too long been kept from public view — Janelle donned a hairstyle we’ve never seen on her (or, frankly, anyone) before: two space buns covered in googly eyes of varying sizes. You know those plastic googly eyes from the craft store? Yeah, those. Check it out.

The eye-conic (hehe) style was crafted by the great Nikki Nelms, Janelle’s go-to hair artist; Nikki did Janelle’s perfect top knots for the Critics’ Choice Awards earlier this month and crafted her sculptural waves for the New York premiere of Hidden Figures.

Thanks to Janelle’s busy promotional schedule, we had not one, not two, but three chances to see her googly buns in action yesterday and friends, they did not disappoint.
First she wore them on the Today Show.
So lovely.
Then she rocked them at an AOL BUILD panel.
Fabulosity personified.
And then she showed them off on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Of course, every single one of her black and white outfits was on point, too.
We’ve never seen a hairstyle that can actually stare BACK at us. Clearly Janelle knows how to get all eyes on her — literally.
