Janelle Monáe got fired from Office Depot back in the day, but it was probably for the best
Last night on The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon featured one of our ultimate favorite young musicians. And, she definitely had a story to tell. It turns out that Janelle Monáe was fired from Office Depot back in the day, and the reason why is pretty hilarious.
Monáe, who showed up wearing her now-famous googly eyes in her hair, told Fallon that she was “pushing ink” while trying to make a career for herself. Since money was tight, she didn’t have her own computer. But know who has a ton of computers? Office Depot, of course!
The singer decided to use one to respond to a brand new fan, and — well — her employer didn’t like that much.

Office Depot aside, getting to hear about Monáe’s earlier gigs is pretty incredible in itself. Really, it shows how much drive she had.
"I used to perform on library stairs. I just love performing," Monáe said. "I never did it for money, I just wanted to know if my material was good enough."
Also, at least it seems like her boss was nice enough in the firing. (Although, losing a source of income as a struggling artist is never totally great.)
"Go do what you love. You don't want to be here," Monáe said, in regards to meeting her boss shortly after sending the e-mail. "It was this big crime, I guess."
We’re glad that Monáe is able to see the good in the situation now, and who knows? If she wasn’t cut loose from Office Depot, she might not be where she is today.
While Monáe’s last album release was in 2013, she’s still making headlines. Just this year alone, she had two big parts in two different movies — Hidden Figures and Moonlight — proving that she’s talented in so many areas. We know her career is going to keep on blossoming!
