Update: James Franco *will definitely* attend the SAG Awards this weekend
In the wake of multiple women accusing him of sexual misconduct, many are wondering whether James Franco will attend the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, January 21st. Franco did miss the 2018 Critics’ Choice Awards on Thursday, January 11th amid the backlash from the allegations made public against him. So will he skip the SAG Awards, too? It appears we won’t have to wait until the awards show to find out.
Because James Franco — who is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his role as The Room‘s Tommy Wiseau in The Disaster Artist — is reportedly set to show up. Update: A rep for Franco confirmed to CNN that the actor will be attending this weekend.
“James will still attend the SAG Awards because there is no reason not to," a source told ET. "He will carry on supporting the cause and moving forward.
A People source echoed this conclusion regarding Franco’s attendance, “There is no reason to believe that he won’t be there.”
To say that the past couple of weeks have been tumultuous for Franco would be an understatement.
Just after clinching the award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for The Disaster Artist at the 2018 Golden Globes, five women came forward to accuse him of predatory behavior and harassment. After addressing the allegations on late night talk shows shortly after the Golden Globes, it appears that the actor has spent some time out of the spotlight, potentially reflecting on these allegations.
Again, Franco was a no-show at the Critics’ Choice Awards (where he won the Best Actor in a Comedy award). He has also reportedly been reconnecting with the women from his past to ask about his behavior and to possibly make amends.
For now, we’ll have to wait and see how Franco is received at the 2018 SAG Awards — in which ladies will completely rule the stage, with Kristen Bell hosting and women (and women alone) presenting — if he does, in fact, show up.
