Jack Antonoff and Lorde’s new song sounds like it’s lifted straight from a teen movie

We love it when songs sound like they could be lifted straight from our favorite teen movies, which is why we can’t get enough of Bleachers’ “Don’t Take The Money.”

If you’re not aware, Bleachers is the band of Jack Antonoff, who is Lena Dunham’s partner. Jack used to be in the band Fun., and is also a pretty prolific songwriter, too. He’s worked with everyone from Carly Rae Jepsen, to his BFF Taylor Swift, and has had a big hand in helping Lorde with her new album MelodramaIn fact, Jack even joined Lorde on stage during her debut performances of “Green Light” and tender ballad “Liability” on Saturday Night Live.

Well, it seems that Jack is back with his own material with his band Bleachers, and it’s a slice of ’80s heaven.

The track, titled “Don’t Take The Money,” is taken from Bleachers’ second album, and sounds like it could be used for the ultimate “go get the girl” moment from any 1980s or 1990s teen movie.

What’s more, the song also features a little help from one of Jack’s many collaborators. Yep, Lorde features on backing vocals.

Speaking about the track via a press release, Jack Antonoff said that the song doesn’t actually have anything to do with money at all.

"'Don't Take The Money’ is a phrase I say in my head all the time. It has nothing to do with actual money. It means to follow the light. Don't ignore a gut feeling. 'Don’t take the money,'" he explained. "I repeat it to myself when I'm trying to stay on track. Specifically in this song I'm writing about my relationship and the verse and chorus run quickly through the past and the fight leading to the euphoria of seeing the light with someone else."

Jack has also been using his time to help fight against proposed cuts to Planned Parenthood and to support LGBTQ rights. Last year the prolific songwriter and artist held a concert for The Ally Coalition, which saw the likes of Carly Rae Jepsen, Lorde, and Charli XCX perform.

What’s more, this year Jack, a founding member of The Ally Coalition, rallied over 140 celebrities to sign a letter opposing Texas’ anti-transgender bathroom bill.

“We all have to stand up, even if we’re not from Texas, or LGBTQ,” he said at the time. “We all have to say that this isn’t OK with us.”  false

To give fans early access to the track, Jack Antonoff and Bleachers put a papier-mâché piñata version of himself in Union Square in New York City that fans had to break open to uncover a USB stick containing the song.

Bleachers’ second album, which is yet to be titled, is expected for release this summer. “Don’t Take The Money” is available now.
