J.Lo’s green Versace dress is basically the reason we have Google Images

2000 was the year George W. Bush won presidency, the year Y2k was supposed to break everything, the year Cast Away came out in theaters, and oh yeah —the year Jennifer Lopez wore that tropical, jungle-green Versace dress to the 42nd Grammy Awards ceremony and blew everyone’s mind. The gorgeous design was sheer, silk chiffon and had a drastic plunge that no one could stop talking about. Almost quite literally, no one could stop talking about it: We needed to know what it looked like, how it stayed up, was the v-neck really that severe? So everyone took to Google, but at the time, Google could only provide websites —not solely images.

Executive chairman of Google tells Project Syndicate, “At the time, it was the most popular search query we had ever seen. But we had no surefire way of getting users exactly what they wanted.” To solve that problem, they created Google Images. So essentially, one of the greatest inventions of the 21st century has Jennifer Lopez and Versace to thank.

It was a big moment for Google, and it was also a huge moment for the fashion designer and J.Lo. According to Vogue, the green dress gave Donatella Versace “the confidence to believe in her own vision for the fashion house.” She told the Canadian Press, “It was an unexpected success.”

The dress also just looked super fab on Jennifer. She looked sexy, powerful, happy, and confident —just what Donatella wanted to communicate through that dress. “She’s confident, for sure. Determined. Women use fashion to achieve goals. A great dress is a great weapon – for their career, for their private life, for so many things,” the designer said.

So, here here for J.Lo and the green Versace dress! If not for you, how would we search images of Cronuts and kittens all day long?
