J.K. Rowling helps a fan who lost hope, restores our faith in everything
J.K. Rowling—the award-winning, best-selling author you maybe have heard of—still makes reaching out to her fans a priority —regardless of her stardom and prolific, busy career. Her involvement in her fans’ lives is not only amazing, but incredibly heartwarming as well, since so many people look up to her as a writer and a mentor. The genius behind Harry Potter has answered pressing HP rumors, clarified questions concerning LGBT characters (while awesomely and smartly educating people on LGBT equality), and even apologized about a very sensitive HP death. So when a fan sent her a concerning tweet that inferred a grave emotional condition, Rowling responded right away with a truly moving series of tweets.
Here’s what the fan tweeted to Rowling:
And here’s how Rowling responded:
And also with this:
Oh, and this:
And finally, with these wise words:
The Twitter user, who received a flood of supportive messages as a result of Rowling’s tweet, showed thanks in a way that’s making me weepy.
“I’m tearing up over here!” wrote Brocaesar. “Humans can truly be amazing to one another. Thank you @jk_rowling and everyone replying.”
People reports that this isn’t the first time Rowling has openly discussed her own battle with depression and suicidal thinking. In 2008, the author was interviewed by a student journalist, and described her past condition this way: “We’re talking suicidal thoughts here – not ‘I’m a little miserable.’ I thought, ‘[My daughter] cannot grow up with me in this state.’”
These words resonated with many battling with depression (her interview has been shared all over the Internet on mental health sites). Through sharing her experience, and de-stigmatizing the conversation, she helped so many people realize that they are not alone.
What helped her recover, ultimately, was putting to pen to paper. “I just thought I want to write so I wrote the book,” she has said. “What was the worst that could happen? It could get turned down by every publisher in Britain. Big deal.”
We all know how that story ended, and we’re grateful that she overcame her personal struggle to provide relief through her work, inspiration through her characters and comfort through her words, for all those who are still suffering.
