Ivanka Trump—woman who was given everything—just said most Americans don’t want help
Another day, another ignorant comment from a member of the first family. Today’s eye roll-inducer: It seems Ivanka Trump doesn’t think most Americans want (or, presumably, need) assistance. In a Sunday, February 26th interview with Fox News, Trump weighed in on the Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez-supported Green New Deal, which—in addition to promoting environmental issues—would guarantee federal jobs for a number of Americans, as well as universal health care. The first daughter said,
“I don’t think most Americans, in their heart, want to be given something. People want to work for what they get. So, I think this idea of a guaranteed minimum is not something most people want.
Wow, okay. There’s a lot to unpack here. Let’s start by laughing (slash, crying) at the notion that the heiress to a multi-million dollar fortune— whose work experiences almost exclusively consists of working at her own father’s company—is in touch with what the average American wants. But, perhaps more importantly, Trump’s words promote a major fallacy about social safety nets like welfare and universal health care. Things like disability coverage, affordable education, and health care are not handouts. They are the bare minimum in ensuring that people are able to work for what they get. Receiving government assistance does not make one lazy or unmotivated, and it’s extremely frustrating to hear a woman of such privilege normalize these ideas (not that we’re surprised).
And a lot of people agree.
