Item Of The Day: Sno-Balls
The warmer months are here! I don’t specifically have a favorite season. I equally love a nice snowstorm and an awesome beach day. Give me both and I’m happy.
One reason I’m super excited that the warmer seasons are here is sno-balls! Some states probably have this amazing shaved ice sensation year round, but here in New York, we’re just welcoming them back.
Snow cones were okay when we were kids. Sno-balls take it to a whole new level. The ice is shaved to a snow-like consistency and then a delicious flavor is added. Cotton candy is usually my go-to flavor. The main photo is a combo of cotton candy and vanilla topped with condensed milk.
I was first introduced to sno-balls in Montauk around five years ago. Now, the place I go to is called Imperial Woodpecker Sno-Balls. Neesa Peterson, the owner, hails from New Orleans and decided to bring the delicious treat to New Yorkers. Thank goodness because my Montauk people moved away!
My favorite flavor right now is a combo of Red Velvet Cake and Creole Cream Cheese. Yes, it’s just ice and flavoring, but it tastes like the real thing. Reminds me of Willy Wonka’s meal gum; instead of a three-course dinner, you get red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. Since I’m gluten-free and can’t always have red velvet cake, this substitution is beyond amazing.
Seriously, find out where there are sno-balls near you and try one. If you’re in New York, check out Imperial Woodpecker’s twitter to see where they are. They’re the best summer treat to beat the heat. (Sorry for the rhyming, but it’s true!)
