Item of the Day: Oh, The Places You’ll Go!

After graduating from high school, my friend Catherine sent me a copy of this book in the mail. Eleven years later, it remains to be one of the top gifts I’ve ever received. Sure, it’s a book made for a younger mindset, but the messages are still relevant. And it was a gentle reminder that there was still a long journey ahead of me.

Released on January 22nd (my birthday!) in 1990 (not my birth year!), this book is known for being a pretty popular title. I’ve always admired Dr. Seuss, and this was the last book he published before he passed away. Within the text, he finds a way to address the ups and downs of life (without being downright depressing) and be pretty inspirational about it. To this day, I still celebrate Seuss’s (Er – Theodore Geisel’s) take on life. I mean, after a tough day, it’s enlightening to think of the following:

Not only does this book make for a great gift (in fact, it’s such a popular choice for high school and college graduates that sales boost every May) but it’s good to have on hand if you’re feeling a bit lost. Sounds crazy, but even with the use of goofy rhyme, Dr. Seuss has a way of making you feel like everything will be okay.

“Oh, The Places You’ll Go!” is also realistic. While Seuss praises the reader (who is the “unnamed protagonist” in the book), he doesn’t guarantee personal success. For example, this passage:

Incredible advice for the recent college grad who is smart and capable, yet unable to find an entry level job these days.

If you’re looking for a good grad gift, or need a light pick-me-up for about ten bucks, seriously consider purchasing this book. Regardless of your age, the message is absolutely outstanding.
