It looks like Ben Affleck won’t be directing the next Batman film after all

A Batman movie directed by Batman? It sounded amazing, but unfortunately, it’s not happening. Ben Affleck won’t be directing The Batman, which is set to be the next film of his franchise. Was he going to? Yes. But instead, he’ll have to settle for producing and starring in the film. Aw, shucks.

It’s rumored that the decision was definitely mutual between Affleck and Warner Brothers, so hopefully there are no hard feelings. Affleck addressed the role switch-up in a statement.

"Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world," Affleck said.

Of course, now the team is on the hunt for a new director. Variety reports that Matt Reeves, who worked on War for the Planet of the Apes, might get asked. Meanwhile, Forbes is guessing that talents like Denis Villeneuve, Gavin O’Connor, and Matt Ross will likely be thrown into consideration.

Affleck is definitely in the midst of a Batman-frame-of-mind. He just wrapped up playing our favorite superhero in The Justice League, and actually wrote the screenplay for The Batman.

Being the writer, director, producer, and star is a bit much — but, three out of four isn’t too shabby.

It’s rumored that the movie is aiming to be filmed this upcoming spring. We definitely can’t wait to see Ben Affleck back in his bat suit!
