Issa Rae joined the cast of “The Hate U Give,” and this is who she’s going to play
Issa Rae is headed to the big screen! The creator and star of HBO’s Insecure officially joined the cast of The Hate U Give. Other stars include the amazing Amandla Stenberg, Regina Hall, and Russell Hornsby. The coming-of-age drama promises to be an intense cinematic experience, and we can’t wait to see Rae bring her considerable skills to this new film.
Based on the phenomenal debut book of the same name by Angie Thomas, The Hate U Give talks about police brutality in an open, honest way.
It follows the story of high school student named Starr (Stenberg). After growing up in a poverty-stricken neighborhood, Starr attends a posh suburban prep school. But her two worlds collide when she witnesses her unarmed friend get gunned down by police.
That’s where Rae’s character comes in. She’ll be playing April, a passionate activist who helps Starr.
Starr finds herself trapped in a terrible position. All she wants to do is speak the truth about what really happened. April helps her find her voice and speak out about what really happened to her friend.

Inspired by real-life events (such as the shooting of an unarmed black man that led to the award-winning film Fruitvale Station) and the Black Lives Matter movement, The Hate U Give promises to be an uncompromising and timely tale. It’s an important story, especially given the current political climate. We’re looking forward to seeing this talented cast and crew bring it to life.
Don’t worry, Rae isn’t bidding TV farewell anytime soon. HBO recently renewed Insecure for a third season, so she’ll be gracing us with her presence on both screens!
