What you need to know about Issa Rae because she’s finally coming to HBO

Issa Rae is finally taking her awkward comedy genius to the small screen! HBO will move forward with a pilot for her show Insecure which means we’re one step closer to Rae’s oddball goodness taking over all of television! If you tuned into Rae’s webseries, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, then you understand how amazing it would be to have a show by Rae provide a much needed dash of diversity to HBO’s already strong female-driven comedy programming, which includes shows like “Veep” and “Girls.”

Let’s celebrate with a few things you need to know about Issa Rae and deets on her new show.

First, a little about the new show: Insecure will potentially join two new female-led comedians on HBO in 2015: Divorce featuring Sarah Jessica Parker and an untitled project from Sarah Silverman. Rae created and wrote Insecure with The Nightly Show’s Larry Wilmore, and he will stay on as an executive producer.

Now let’s look at how Rae first drew her massive fan-base: Six words: The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.  The web-series was born from Rae’s observation that women of color were poorly represented or stereotyped in Hollywood. As Rae puts it, “I don’t think the mainstream media understands people of color are multidimensional.” In an interview with Vulture in 2011, Rae sort of predicted her future, saying, “I would love Awkward Black Girl to be on television, with the right team of people who understand and get it. If Awkward Black Girl could make it to HBO starring a dark-skinned black girl, that would be revolutionary.”

But before all that: Rae attended Stanford University, where she got a head start on perfecting her web content craft, creating a mock reality series called Dorm Diaries. In fact, Awkward Black Girl was the third series Rae created before it landed on the pop culture radar.

More proof that Rae’s pretty kick-ass: If she wasn’t being badass, starring in and showrunning her own series, Rae would’ve pursued a career in environmental sustainability.
