Science just told us that playing Tetris could actually be GOOD for our brains

Anyone who’s ever played Tetris knows how addictive that game is (there’s just SOMETHING about those falling blocks), and now science is here to tell us that this 30-year old game could actually be GOOD for our brains.

As the Huffingon Post reports, the PBS Digital show BrainCraft just explained to us how Tetris can do a lot of awesome things for our brains, including making parts of our cerebral cortex thicker (the part of our brain that is majorly responsible for things like memory, attention, awareness, thought, language, and consciousness) and make other parts of your brain more efficient.

Of course, as the BrainCraft host Vanessa Hill explains, these results were based on a study in which participants played Tetris regularly for three months, and as Hill gently reminds us, participating in ANY new activity regularly for three months would change the structure of your brain.

However, be forewarned, the game is VERY addictive and that can be a not-so-great thing. As the video explains “It’s been reported that some people become so hooked on Tetris that they experience what’s called ‘The Tetris Effect’ where thoughts of Tetris consume your non-gaming hours. You may dream of completing more lines and mentally fitting everyday objects together.”

Hill concludes that “The question of whether Tetris is good or bad for us is kind of like a big puzzle. For now, you can just keep on playing- in moderation.”
