Here is some Internet slang officially being added to the dictionary
Who says you can’t use Internet slang IRL? It seems that more and more, words are finding their roots online and creeping into our everyday conversation, so much so that Dictionary.com is adding a few of the more viral terms to its lexicon.
While the full list hasn’t been released quite yet, the words they have confirmed definitely won’t surprise you. For instance, you can now officially say something is “on fleek,” which the website defines as “flawlessly styled, groomed, etc.” “Yaaas” has also made its way on the list, its definition being “Yes! (used as a strong expression of excitement, approval, agreement, etc.).”
Then, there are some other Internet-born words that, while not as meme-worthy, are also super important:
- Digital citizen: a person who develops the skills and knowledge to effectively use the Internet and other digital technology, especially in order to participate responsibly in social and civic activities.
- Mx: a title of respect prefixed to a person’s surname: unlike Mr., Mrs., or Ms., it does not indicate gender and may be used by a person with any or no specific gender identity.
- Sapiosexual: a person who finds intelligence to be a sexually attractive quality in others.
Events like this serve as reminders that the Internet is more and more becoming a significant part of culture, as well as “real” life. I bet you can guess how that makes us feel: yaaaaaaaaaaas.
