This college student’s message on period shaming is one every person needs to hear
Periods have been a pretty taboo subject for quite a long time, and menstruating persons often try to keep quiet about the subject.
But there’s been something of a recent turn of events. We called 2015 the Year of the Period, but I think 2016 is getting off to a good start, too. Take this Facebook post (uploaded last Tuesday) that’s recently gone viral, garnering applause from menstruators all over (to date, the post has over 35,000 likes and over 7,000 shares). Occidental College student Chance Ward happened to overhear a girl ask her friend for an extra tampon, but when the girl realized Ward overheard it, she went on to apologize. But Ward did her one better:
“Me being me, I hit ha with the ‘girl, u gucci’ before reaching down into my fanny pack and giving her one of the tampons I keep in there.”
The girl wound up being totally shocked that Ward would have a tampon, but Ward was totally not having it. This is what Ward had to say next:
“This is so sad. Why don’t y’all love y’all friends that menstruate? Like men will make whole guest rooms in their house just in case someone needs to stay. But god forbid that person menstruate, because I bet you won’t be no extra pads or tampons under that guest bathroom sink.
Ugh anyway to all my menstruating friends, if y’all need it, know I got it. I keep some in my fanny pack when I go to the gym, and some in my backpack all the time. Never feel embarrassed for asking for one. Never feel embarrassed for being human.”
So, so true. If you can keep an extra tooth brush or extra towels for guests, why not a pack of pads at least? It really would be awesome.
