It’s International Polar Bear Day, so let’s raise awareness (and stare at gorg gifs) in their honor
Polar Bears are some of Earth’s most majestic animals. They are amazing hunters, swimmers and, as cubs, they’re downright adorable (from a distance, obvs). But, polar bears also need our help! According to the World Wildlife Fund, ongoing and potential loss of Arctic habitats, resulting from climate change, put polar bears on the threatened species list in the US under the Endangered Species Act, May 2008.
Which is why International Polar Bear Day, sponsored by Polar Bears International, is observed to raise awareness about polar bears and global warming. It’s also an opportunity to remind everyone how special these animals truly are. Cue some magical gifs, fun facts, and deets on how to make a difference:
Polar bears are strong swimmers — some have even been spotted swimming hundreds of miles from land!
Their large front feet, which are slightly webbed, help them paddle. And, fur grows on the bottom of their paws to protect against ice and freezing surfaces!
Polar bears are 900 to 1,600 pounds and live 25 to 30 years!
Polar bear moms are single moms, who are super-protective of their young. Feel free to stare at the above gif for an hour.
These mama bears dig dens to protect from arctic elements and cubs live with their moms for 28 months.
Polar bears do not fear humans. They are serious predators, people.
FYI: Underneath their white fur, polar bears have black skin to help absorb sunlight.
Polar bears are in serious danger of going extinct due to melting sea ice.
