Things are about to change for all ye famous people on Instagram
Congratulations are in order today for Instagram — they just passed the 300 million users mark, which is huge considering the photo sharing app is just about four years old now! On the heels of this monument occasion, they also dropped some #BigNews for users today, starting with the fact that they’ll now offer verified accounts, for celebrities just like Twitter.
“Today, we’re excited to announce verified badges for celebrities, athletes and brands, making it easier for you to connect with the authentic accounts you’re looking for,” Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom said in a blog post. That’s very exciting news, because all of is have probably fallen for fake celebrity accounts before that look super authentic, and then you realize that REALNPH87357xoxo isn’t actually the real NPH.
Along with verifying accounts, they’re also going to start cracking down even more on spam accounts that run amok on the app. “Keeping Instagram authentic is critical — it’s a place where real people share real moments,” Sysreom wrote. So — hopefully! — we’ll stop seeing so many, follow for a follow???
While many of us won’t see major changes to our accounts, we might start seeing more promoted posts, or even an increase of (newly verified) brands in our feed. “It’s very important for us to do this especially as we introduce advertising to make sure that you see the real one,” Systrom contained. So now we’ll be 100% positive it’s Taylor Swift and Burberry who are tagging #nofilter for us to see.
