Get ready for this major Instagram upgrade

In case you weren’t convinced that Instagram is becoming a more and more respected medium of photography, this update will seal the deal. One of the major drawbacks of the app was that it capped its resolution at 640×640, an artifact of its earlier social media days that hasn’t managed to keep up with the times. But fear no more, Instagram confirmed that they’re preparing to upgrade to a whopping 1080×1080.

This is big deal for many reasons. First of all, it’s legit. They’re not just stretching out photos to fit this new size, the photos are really 1080×1080. This is particularly useful for the rising number of users who are uploading photos from their DSLRs and their higher quality iPhone 6s. Up until now, users have had to watch in horror as their crystal clear photos compressed to Instagram’s resolution, but sooner rather than later, the app will start supporting every pixel of their masterpieces.

A spokesperson told The Verge that they actually started rolling out this update over the past week, so some of you may already see it. Soon, it will be standard practice across all iOS and Android devices.

If this is all Greek to you, you can take a look at The Verge‘s examples, showing the Instagram picture vs. the full resolution photo. You can see exactly what it is you’re getting out of this added resolution. It’s pretty stunning. The photos are clear and professional. You wouldn’t know they were taken as a quick snap on the go. Which is indicative of how the app is changing from a place for amateurs to spruce up their snaps to a portfolio of well-curated images that people should, and do, take pride in.
