Issa Rae raps her daily affirmations in this Insecure Season 4 teaser—and it’s the ultimate 2020 mood

Issa Rae leveled up in 2019. She executive produced the HBO series A Black Lady Sketch Show, launched her own record label with Atlantic Records, and filmed and starred in two movies. The Photograph, a romantic drama, is set to be released on February 14th (Valentine’s Day, naturally), and The Lovebirds, a romantic comedy, is set to be released on April 3rd. She’s proven her versatility and her ability to somehow defy time and do more than we knew was humanly possible. As if that weren’t enough to keep us interested—and to earn the woman a much-deserved vacation—Rae also produced and starred in Insecure Season 4, which returns April 12th. Thankfully, she gifted us with a teaser.
The Insecure teaser shows Rae’s character, Issa Dee, doing her daily affirmations in the mirror—an object that has played a significant role throughout the series.
And her mirror rap is the 2020 mantra we all need. “It’s time to level up, ho, call me elevated,” Issa starts, “Not worried about no bullshit, not worried about no haters.”
The teaser doesn’t give us much insight into the plot of Season 4, but it provides a sense of the overall energy the characters will possess. We’ve seen Issa and her ride-or-die best friend, Molly, make some big mistakes throughout the first three seasons (and we never stopped loving them). But this season it sounds like we’re going to see them be much more intentional with their decisions.
“This season is about our characters leveling up, entering the next phase in their life, when they’re deciding to be intentional about a lot of the things that they’re doing, Rae told reporters at the Television Critics Association’s Winter Press Tour on Thursday. “Issa specifically has quit her job and she’s pursuing this passion. Molly is in her first real relationship in a very long time and kind of prioritizing that and balancing her work and relationship.
That sentiment is echoed by HBO’s synopsis. In Insecure‘s 10-episode Season 4, the network says, “we’ll see these characters evaluating relationships, both new and old, in an effort to figure out who and what comes with them in this next phase of their lives.”
Both Issas have secured a spot on our 2020 inspiration boards, and we are ready for everything they do.
Issas, we see you on your grind, and so does Twitter.

And as we send our praises to Rap Queen Issa, let us never, ever forget that poetic bop “Broken Pussy.” Until April 12th comes around, we’ll be playing the tune in our heads and saying our daily affirmations.
