The 7 most insane things heard on the Philadelphia police scanner after the Super Bowl

In case you missed it, last night, February 4th, the Philadelphia Eagles beat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII. Their win upset one of football’s most decorated teams — and the Patriots’ quarterback, Tom Brady. After the underdog team’s surprising victory, the people of Philadelphia took to the streets to celebrate. And, as is often the case when you get large crowds of people together, some fans got a bit too rowdy. Here are the wildest ways fans celebrated the Eagles’ win, as recorded by the Philadelphia police scanner.

1 There were fireworks.

At 11 p.m., fans reportedly lit fireworks at 15th Street, according to Slate.

2 Someone lit a Christmas tree on fire.

At 11:25 p.m., revelers reportedly set fire to a Christmas tree.

“I need to get my fire extinguisher out of my trunk,” one officer announced over the police scanner. “I got a fire on Broad Street just south of South. Someone lit a Christmas tree on fire.”

3 Drones were flying.

Just before 11 p.m., officers reported that someone was flying a drone. Later, police appeared to track down the drone pilot and attempt to arrest him.

“We got a visual of the person flying the drone,” one officer said. “We’re going to get him.”

4 Revelers climbed the gates of City Hall.

There were reports that people were both clambering over and ramming the gates of Philadelphia City Hall. Photos posted to Twitter revealed that rowdy fans were pulling a keg over the gate as well.

5 At least one car was tipped over.

Police guarded a car that the mob managed to tip on its side.

6 Light poles toppled.

The Philadelphia Police Department had sprayed hydraulic fluid on light poles in an attempt to keep crowds away. But nevertheless, several people managed to climb on and knock down light poles near City Hall.

7 People jumped off the awning of the Ritz-Carlton hotel

Officers were heard asking for estimates of how many were injured in a cluster of people who were jumping off of the awning at the Ritz-Carlton. A video posted to Twitter documented the scene.

The Eagles’ 2018 victory is truly historic: It’s the first time the team has ever won a Super Bowl. We can understand why fans are so excited, but that being said, it’s important to celebrate safely. Congratulations to the Eagles!
