This ingredient found in a lot of your beauty products may soon be banned

It’s scary to think how many harmful ingredients are in the cosmetics we use on a daily basis, including parabens, polyethylene, and sodium lauryl sulfate. There’s another ingredient in your beauty products that is wildly dangerous, but you may not have heard of it yet: 1,4-dioxane. It’s a chemical that has a potentially cancerous effect on our bodies, yet it’s found in just about every household beauty and makeup item you can think of.

1,4-dioxane is tossed into all sorts of items, including shampoo and conditioner, body lotion, face wash, and even household cleaning supplies.

The scary part is that companies aren’t even required to include this ingredient on the label of their products, so it could be floating around in all your cosmetics—and you wouldn’t even know it.

That’s why Congress is trying to get this dangerous ingredient banned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand are leading the initiative and petitioning the FDA to get rid of 1,4-dioxane.

It all started when they learned that 71 percent of water suppliers in Long Island, NY had a concentration of 1,4-dioxane, which poses a one-in-a-million cancer risk. Compare that to the 6.9 percent of water suppliers around the country that have the same amount of 1,4-dioxane in their water. Just as scary is the fact that nearly half of all personal care items (46 percent, to be exact) includes this dangerous ingredient.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed that both senators are successful in this petition, because it’s scary to think that your foundation could cause cancer.
