Here’s what Groot says in Infinity War before he disappears — and it’s worse than you could possibly imagine

Warning: The following post contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War, and honestly, they’re pretty devastating. Proceed ahead with caution — and tissues.

As if the end of Avengers: Infinity War weren’t devastating enough, James Gunn just revealed a minor detail that has us in tears all over again. When the final few minutes of the film saw Thanos complete the Infinity Gauntlet and snap his fingers, we dreaded the horror to come — but we sat in utter shock as, immediately, half the Avengers faded into nothing.

While we’ve already mourned the shocking and frustrating losses of Peter Parker and T’Challa — not to mention Bucky! Again! — our hearts are still crushed by Groot and Rocket Raccoon’s devastating goodbye, as the beloved angsty teen tree disappeared into dust. As if Rocket watching Groot die for a second time weren’t sad enough, James Gunn just revealed a detail that’s downright heartbreaking.

If, unlike Thor, you didn’t take Groot as an elective in school, you likely didn’t know what Groot said to Rocket as he disappeared, but luckily — or honestly, unluckily — Gunn was able to translate for us.

After a fan asked the Guardian of the Galaxy director what Groot said, Gunn took Twitter to reveal that the Groot’s final word was “Dad.”

Ummmm, WHAT? Here we thought we couldn’t possibly feel any worse about the end of Infinity War — *sobs* — and yet Gunn managed to surprise us.

While Gunn wasn’t a writer or director of Infinity War, the Guardians of the Galaxy helmer — who is set to write and direct the third film — reportedly gave significant input on the Guardians characters to directors Joe and Anthony Russo.

Naturally, Gunn’s reveal has fans circling back through the five stations of grief:

Please respect our privacy as we mourn Groot’s death until the moment he returns — because he’d better — in Avengers 4. If you’re emotionally brave enough to see the film again knowing Groot’s last word, Avengers: Infinity War is currently in theaters.
