In honor of Shakira’s 40th birthday we’ve rounded up the Latina supernova’s best looks

Shakira, queen of hip shaking, body rolling, Colombian goodness is turning 40 today, and to celebrate she released a video for the new salsa version of her hit song “Chantaje,” and all we can say is #goals. The outspoken Latina activist looks better than ever, and proves that age is just a number. Let’s not forget, besides being Shakira, she’s also a mom, activist, and oh yeah, a Grammy winning artist. Not to mention the woman has incredible, bold style and has been serving us looks for years. To celebrate her birthday, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite ensembles through the years, from the classic “Hip Don’t Lie” era to some more outrageously loud looks. Enjoy!

Chantaje remix

Shakira’s outfit for the Chantaje remix is everything. Besides her enviable dance moves, Shakira’s light wash harness denim shorts are a unexpected in the best way. Topped with a simple tee and a nude and black faux cage bra, the look takes two classic summertime staples and upgrades them into something a little bit sexier. Worn with her long locks in soft waves and simple glowing makeup, Shakira makes 40 look INCREDIBLE. But let’s be honest, when does Shakira not look amazing? Either way, come summer, we’re stealing this look.

Here are more looks we will covet now and forever:

The 2014 Billboard Music Awards

Let us not forget Shakira’s outfit at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards. For her performance at the event, the bombshell chose a long sleeve, semi-sheer, ultra embellished number and we are living for it. The dress, which was more of a glorified shirt if we’re being honest, featured an asymmetrical cut, exposing Shakira’s fishnets and thigh high boots to perfection. Finished with metallic floral embellishments and just the right amount of wear and tear, this look is still lust worthy.

The 49th Annual Grammy Awards

That bandeau! That sarong! That voice! Shakira’s performance at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards will always be iconic, in part due to her ridiculously amazing outfit, partly due to her being Shakira. The “hips don’t lie” era was a good one for the star, who’s never shied away from a midriff bearing outfit. Part of the reason we love the Latina supernova is because she so readily embraces fashion choices most of us would rather simply avoid. Shakira proves that fashion is suppose to be fun! And that if you can’t dance in something, it’s probably not worth wearing.

The 2010 MTV Europe Music Awards

Shakira was serving some serious looks in this chrome fringed outfit at the 2010 MTV Europe Music Awards. In all her futuristic cowgirl meets Princess Leia glory, the Colombian Goddess pop, locked and dropped her way to our hearts. And she also made us question some of our own personal fashion choices, like why don’t we have a pair of these pants in our wardrobe? If there’s one thing Shakira knows it’s that dancing is way more fun in pieces with plenty of movement. And bonus points for the fringed cuffs!

The 2010 NBA All-Star Game

So even if she was’t stepping out of a huge cage, we’d probably still be head over heels for Shakira’s look at the 2010 NBA All-Star game. It’s like this woman can do no wrong! In theory, a bodysuit with a plunging neckline, sequin body, giant fur shoulder pads and metallic accents shouldn’t work. But leave it to Shakira to rock it flawlessly and make us envious. Completing the look with knee high boots, perfectly sheer black tights, fingerless gloves and a flawless blowout, the singer proves that less isn’t always more.

Ahoy in Rotterdam

For Shakira’s 2010 performance in Rotterdam, she wore what may be one of her best looks yet. Giving us Lumpy Space Princess goes totally glam vibes, Shakira wore an eccentric, electric pink ensemble, complete with a hood, and she actually pulled it off! With a fitted bodice and layered skirt, the dress had the right mix of overwhelming volume and structure, once again proving that yes, Shakira can literally wear anything and look better than us. By finishing off the look with two leather studded bracelets, she brought a slight edge to the look. But let’s be honest, we’re really just here for this dress.

FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala

For FIFA’s 2011 Ballon d’Or Gala Shakira wore one of our favorite numbers yet. With the perfect blonde bob and an out of this world crimson Furne One gown, Shakira looked like the embodiment of old school glamour. But, in true fiery Latina style, Shakira’s gown had the perfect amount of added flair. With jewel embellishments on the bodice and an exaggerated mermaid style silhouette, the dress still felt original and totally Shakira. The devil’s in the details and with a finishing touch of an exaggerated, sharp, sweetheart neckline and a miniature red and black clutch, we’re sure the devil would sell his own soul to see Shakira in this look.

2009 Whitney Museum Gala

Shakira definitely turned heads when she wore this Versace number to the Whitney Museum Gala in 2009. The skin tight, hip hugging metallic number featured a thigh high slit for maximum impact, three eye -leading panels up the body and a strapless cut for even more va-va-voom. And in true 2009 fashion, Shakira’s hair was done in bumpit looking style. With a simple pair of strappy sandals and a fresh face of makeup, Shakira looks effortlessly glamorous, once again. Versace and Shakira are the heroes we didn’t know we needed.
