Idris Elba has joined Taylor Swift in the Cats musical—because 2018 is wild

Over the summer it was announced that Taylor Swift would star alongside James Corden, Jennifer Hudson, and Ian McKellen in the film adaptation of the musical Cats. Now Variety is reporting that Idris Elba is in final negotiations to join the live-action Andrew Lloyd Webber musical as well. We can’t say we ever imagined a day where Swift and Elba would star opposite one another in a musical where human adults dress like felines, but hey, it’s 2018 and anything goes.

The Cats adaptation is being directed by Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) and it’s already slated to hit theaters at the end of 2019. Hudson will play Grizabella (who sings the iconic song: “Memory”), but it’s still unclear who everyone else on the cast is playing.

If you aren’t familiar with the musical, the show first opened at the New London Theatre in 1981 and has the distinction of being one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history. It’s also totally bonkers. It’s about a bunch of cats (aka people dressed up in fur and spandex) who sing show tunes about being cats. It’s delightfully campy and we’re cautiously optimistic about how this musical will translate to the screen.

Also, if you weren’t aware—Elba can sing. He’s also a DJ, but that’s another story.

During a 2016 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Elba proved he could dance as well. Clearly, the man is a triple, no, quadruple threat. We can’t wait to see this talented cast don literal catsuits in Cats.
