There might be more ‘Hunger Games’ movies — but if so, there’s a catch

Good news Hunger Games fans, Mockingjay Part 2 isn’t the last you’ve seen of the corrupt world of Panem. On Tuesday, Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns stated that the film production and distribution studio is keen to explore more films in the dystopian post-apocalyptic world of Panem and its thirteen districts. Variety reported that Burns let slip at UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in New York, that the Hunger Games “will live on and on.” But the chances of us seeing Katniss and Peeta again are pretty slim.

Burns revealed very little as to what future films in the franchise will look like, but mentioned that while the first two films, The Hunger Games and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire had arenas, the latter two, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2 did not. According to Deadline, Burns told investors, “The one thing that kids say they missed was there was no arenas. If we went backwards there obviously would be arenas.” Plus, author Suzanne Collins starts the books off at the 74th Hunger Games, so the new movies have a LOT of history to work with.

This move from Lionsgate might be another potential money grab from a studio that felt compelled to split the last of Collin’s YA into two separate films, the latest of which has dominated the box office for the past three weekends and so far has made $524.2 million globally. However, based on what we know, it’s safe to say that future films will be prequels that’ll hopefully show us how previous victors like Finnick Odair and Johanna Mason won their tournaments. Even more likely, odds are, we’ll finally be able to see Haymitch’s origin story.
