PSA for ‘Normal People’ Fans: Hulu Will Adapt Another Sally Rooney Book
Coming soon, to a laptop near you: Conversations with Friends, Sally Rooney’s 2017 debut novel, will soon be adapted into a 12-episode series for Hulu. It’ll be helmed by the same creative team behind Normal People, the thirst-trapped adaptation of Rooney’s second novel. So at least we know this series is gonna be hot.
“Sally Rooney perfectly and beautifully captures the complicated dynamics of relationships in her stories,” Beatrice Springborn, VP Content at Hulu said in a press release.
“After bringing that to life in Normal People to an overwhelmingly positive response, we are honored to do the same with Conversations with Friends.”
Element Pictures will produce the half-hour series in partnership with BBC Three, while Normal People director Lenny Abrahamson and writer Alice Birch will return to their respective positions. Rooney herself will co-executive produce.
Conversations with Friends follows Dublin university student Frances as she navigates two consuming, complex relationships: One with her best friend, Bobbi; and the other with Nick, the older, married actor with whom Frances forges an intense sexual and emotional bond. Rooney also tracks Frances’ painful battle with endometriosis, her strained relationship with her alcoholic father, and her own struggle with what the hell she should do with her life. It’s a deeply insightful millennial coming-of-age story of the highest order—and, yes, the sex scenes are just as good as they are in Normal People. Unfortunately, there is no mention of the male protagonist wearing an unbearably hot chain necklace.

No information yet on when the series will premiere. In the meantime, snag the novel at your local independent bookstore, or one of these Black-owned bookstores with online ordering.
