Hugh Jackman didn’t know wolverines were a real animal, and LOL
It’s hard to remember a time when Hugh Jackman wasn’t Wolverine. But did you know that when he first landed the role, Hugh Jackman didn’t know that wolverines were real? In a recent interview, he confessed to thinking that the character Wolverine had something to do with wolves, not realizing that wolverines are a species of their own.
“I didn’t even know there was a wolverine. I literally, embarrassingly, did about two weeks of research on wolves,” he admitted in an interview with the Associated Press. When he showed up to film the first X-Men film in 2000, though, he was in for an interesting revelation.
Director Bryan Singer pulled Hugh aside to talk about his acting choices:
"He said, ‘Are you sort of walking funny, what’s going on?’ And I said, ‘I’ve been doing this thing with wolves,’ and he goes, ‘You know you’re not a wolf, right?’
Sorry, Hugh, but we can’t stop laughing!
Although to be fair, if you say “wolverine,” one could assume that you’re talking about a wolf. After all, wolverines aren’t particularly common animals, so you can’t blame Hugh for his mistake. But we’re still cracking up.
To be clear , though, wolverines look like bears, but they’re more closely related to weasels. Wolverine from X-Men, on the other hand, is a mutant with super senses, retractable claws, and the ability to heal from almost any wound.
When Jackman told Singer that he didn’t believe wolverines existed, Singer shook his head in disbelief. “‘Go to the zoo, dude,’” Jackson remembers Singer ordering. Jackman did as he was told, and he learned something new!
What started as a total misunderstanding led to what is arguably the biggest role of his career. He is currently promoting the last Wolverine movie, Logan, and the special black and white version of the film, Logan Noir. Any guesses on what the character might have been like if Jackman had never learned the truth about wolverines? We’re LOL-ing just thinking about it!
