How to make a Shamrock Shake at home, because you know you want one

The Shamrock Shake is officially back at McDonald’s! And the timing could not be luckier. With St. Patrick’s Day still some four weeks away, we have 28 days (at least!) to indulge our meanest mint-green milkshake fantasies.

But if you’re like us, there will never be enough days (or enough money) to get your Shamrock Shake fill. And rather than doubling back to our local McDonald’s daily to scoop up our favorite fast-food shake (no Shamrock Shake shame here!), we think we ought to do one better. Literally. So we found out how to make one of these sweet treats at home.

Originally introduced back in 1970, McDonald’s Shamrock Shake has since become a sweet St. Patrick’s Day staple. Last year, McDonald’s tried to improve on the spirited Irish holiday classic by adding chocolate to the iconic shake, but lovers of the Shamrock Shake didn’t buy it. Much. McDonald’s even rolled out a super advanced straw for the updated shake, but, as luck would have it, it left many consumers cold.

Thank goodness, we don’t have to worry about all that this year. Even though McDonald’s is going back to its roots with this year’s OG Shamrock Shake, we feel #blessed to make the St. Paddy’s Day holiday our own. By hanging some St. Patrick’s Day decorations, reading up on what St. Patrick’s Day is really about, and sucking down a homemade Shamrock Shake in our PJs, natch.

The recipe for the Shamrock Shake is simple.

First, gather your delicious ingredients: 2 cups of vanilla ice cream, 1 1/4 cups of milk, and 1/4 teaspoon of mint extract.

Next, combine them all in a blender. Don’t forget the festive green food coloring!

While your Shamrock Shake blends, prepare your garnishes: chocolate syrup, whipped cream, and green decorator’s sugar.

Kiss me, I’m delicious!

When your milkshake mixture is smooth, pour it in some tall drinking glasses (green, if you’re fancy) and add a heavy-duty straw.

Time to add your garnishes. And if you want your shake to taste like the Shamrock original, be generous.

Now we can celebrate St. Patrick’s Day — and our love of Shamrock Shakes — all year long. Sláinte!
