Here’s how often you should ACTUALLY wash your jeans

If you’re like us, jeans are one of those clothing items we should wash more, but often don’t. But here’s how often you should actually wash your jeans, according to Business Insider. But before we get to the news, any guesses? Weekly? Monthly? Whenever you remember to or feel like it?

Business Insider suggests washing them when they smell, which depends on factors such as how much you sweat to how often you wear said pair of jeans per week. They hypothesize that if you use smell as your barometer, you’ll wash your jeans once every two to six months. Tbh, that doesn’t seem like very often at all.

However, other sources give other timelines regarding how often you should wash your jeans.

For instance, Levi’s CEO and President Chip Bergh says never wash your jeans, reported The Independent. NEVER. Whaaaaaaaaaaat?!

Instead, Burgh believes in spot cleaning them with a toothbrush.

“A good pair of denim doesn’t really need to be washed in the washing machine except for very infrequently or rarely, Burgh told Fortune in a video. “…We go into autopilot and after we’re finished wearing something, we just automatically toss it into the laundry.

Burgh believes that washing a pair of Levi’s, for instance, will damage the material. Plus, it wastes water. In case you’re curious, you can watch Bergh’s reasoning in this video.

Okay, so we have “by smell” as one answer and “rarely to never” as another.

Surely, there must be other opinions out there on the matter.

PopSugar says every five to six wears, unless “excessive sweating or accidental spills happen.”

Tiffany Gifford, celebrity stylist to Miranda Lambert, Sheryl Crow, and others, is of the “sometimes” camp when it comes to when to wash jeans.

“Only when needed, ideally not after every single wear, Gifford told Today.

She also recommends hanging them up to dry versus using the dryer. Though they may feel stiff at first, that’ll go away after 30 minutes or so, Gifford said. Overall, your jeans will last longer.

Has all this got you thinking how often you ~really~ wash your jeans?! Buzzfeed asked its readers how often they wash their jeans, and answers ranged from “never” to “after every wear.” So it’s certainly a controversial topic and one we may never get a definitive answer to.

Okay, so all that said, we think the smell test may be the way to go, with the spot cleaning between washes. Like some have said, it’s a case-by-case basis, though we’ll probably err on the side of washing them more versus less. The good news? You can decide for yourself, since, judging from the above, there’s no wrong answer!
