This is how often the average person changes their sheets, and it’s slightly gross
Settling into fresh sheets after a long day is one of life’s greatest pleasures, and an easy one to achieve. But even so, the average person does not change their sheets nearly as often as one might think. According to a 1,000-person survey conducted by bedding reviewer, Mattress Advisor, the majority of people change their sheets every 24.4 days. When you do the math, that’s about three weeks and three days of sleeping in the same sheets.
You’re probably either cringing right now because you’re grossed out, or thinking, “Yeah…and?”
According to a CNN writeup, sheets should ideally be washed once a week in hot water, and dried on high heat to kill germs. Going two weeks with the same sheets is fine, but there’ll be some serious dead skin buildup by the end of week two. So if you’re washing every three weeks, you’re probably sleeping in a sea of dead skin. Just FYI.
The Mattress Advisor survey also revealed some interesting sheets and society-related facts. For example, other people don’t start judging your hygiene until you wait 35 days or more between sheet washes. Yep, for some reason 35 days is the magic number.
If you are waiting 35 days or more, chances are you’re probably single. According to the Mattress Advisor survey, married couples change their bedclothes about every 19.9 days whereas single people wait 37 days on average. And single men change them less often than single women.
Mattress Advisor also found that people usually wait four to 11 days to wash sheets after sexual activity.
At the end of the day, it’s not the biggest deal if you don’t change your sheets super regularly. But we can all agree snuggling into a nice fresh bed is basically the best, so we might use this as a friendly reminder to launder our bedding today…maybe.
