How do I dance at prom? The first rule is to have fun

Ah, prom — the only time you’ll ever see your peers all collectively dressed in tuxedos and ballgowns, boogieing to the clean version of Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow.” It’s a special moment to soak in and be a part of. It doesn’t really matter if your boogieing skills are up to par. But if you’re worried about how your dancing will compare to others come prom night, if you’re asking “How do I dance at prom?”, let’s have a chat.

Firstly, unless you’re on the championship-winning high school dance team, no one’s expecting you to be the next Fred Astaire. What we mean is that no one’s expecting you to be the next Usher, or Channing Tatum in Magic Mike, or 2014 VMAs Beyoncé. Do you get what we’re trying to say?

As long as you’re having fun shaking your groove thang, you’re dancing “correctly.”

But, what if you’re shy and not quite comfortable going full Napoleon Dynamite out there on the prom dance floor in front of ~everyone~? That’s totally cool and reasonable. Although we urge you to try your best not to care what anyone thinks, we understand that’s easier said than done.

So, start slow. Get acquainted with the dance floor by simply stepping to the beat. You know — the side-to-side step. Add a bit of shoulder action and just feel the groove à la Steve Harvey.

And if you guys are really serious about coming prepared to the party, there are numerous tutorials on YouTube showing how to nail several simple dance moves.

Dancing with your date is really no different from dancing solo. Unless your prom committee agreed that ballroom dancing is the only dancing allowed at prom this year, you shouldn’t be too worried. A partnered slow dance is basically just swaying back and forth — no fancy waltz or polka moves necessary.

Unless you’re into that stuff, which, if so, bring those moves to the floor! Why were hiding those from us!?

There’s absolutely no right or wrong way to hit the dance floor. Prom is what you make it. If you want to have the best time ever, then have the best time ever.

It doesn’t matter if you’re off-tempo, have two left feet, or if you’ve never even heard music before. You can and will dance at prom. We have all the faith in the world.
