“House of Cards” might do something drastic and completely write out Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood

Just after eight House of Cards employees came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against Kevin Spacey, we’re now getting a better idea of what the future of Netflix’s political drama could look like. And apparently, the House of Cards writing team is working to write Kevin Spacey out of the show.

Word is that Season 6 — which will be its last, as the company announced on Monday — was nearly entirely written and a couple weeks into production. But the show, of course, came to a halt when Anthony Rapp came forward with allegations of sexual assault against Spacey via BuzzFeed News. Rapp alleged that Spacey made unwanted sexual advances toward him when he was only 14. Spacey was 26.

Many responded to the allegations, including Netflix and producers at Media Rights Capital, explaining that they were “deeply troubled” by the story. Shortly thereafter, production on the show was suspended, a halt that will reportedly last for two weeks (if not longer) to give the writers adequate time to make changes to the season and potentially cut Spacey’s manipulative politician Frank Underwood out altogether. And, though unlikely, a complete shutdown could happen.

About that rewrite, the question is: How would House of Cards write Spacey out?

That, of course, is unknown at this point. But producers are apparently considering killing off the character and focusing on his wife/fellow politician, Claire (Robin Wright), instead, according to Variety. And that wouldn’t be unthinkable in any scenario (and warning, some spoilers follow), considering the show’s history: Frank dies in the Michael Dobbs book that the show is inspired by.

All that said, this story is ongoing and there are a lot of moving parts. In the meantime, we’ll be standing by for official word.
