The “House of Cards” creator responded to the sexual assault allegations made against Kevin Spacey

A day after actor Anthony Rapp publicly alleged in an interview with BuzzFeed that Kevin Spacey made unwanted sexual advances toward him at 14, House of Cards creator Beau Willimon is speaking out.

Willimon released a statement Monday calling Rapp’s account of the alleged 1986 incident “deeply troubling.” And added that he never saw or was aware of “inappropriate behavior” from Spacey during his time on the Netflix drama — which will end after Season 6, as the streaming giant announced today.

Willimon’s full statement reads, per Variety:

“Anthony Rapp’s story is deeply troubling. During the time I worked with Kevin Spacey on House of Cards, I neither witnessed nor was aware of any inappropriate behavior on set or off. That said, I take reports of such behavior seriously and this is no exception. I feel for Mr. Rapp and I support his courage.

Willimon left House of Cards in 2016, after the popular Netflix show’s fourth season. His statement comes just hours after Spacey posted his own response to the original Buzzfeed News interview on Twitter, in which he claimed to have no memory of the encounter Rapp described. But the actor did say he was “horrified to hear the story” and that if he did in fact behave that way he owes Rapp “the sincerest apology.”

In a move that’s already sparking backlash online, Spacey also used the Twitter post to reveal his decision to “choose” to “live as a gay man” — which some are criticizing as a distraction from Rapp’s accusation of sexual assault as well as a backward suggestion that sexual identity is a choice.

Rapp — known for his role in the original cast of Rent and in the new Star Trek: Discovery series — addressed the article on Twitter on Sunday night. He explained that he came forward with the story now and is “standing on the shoulders of the many courageous women and men who have been speaking out to shine a light and hopefully make a difference, as they have done for me.”

Rapp’s story is the latest in a flood of allegations of sexual misconduct against Hollywood power players that have emerged in the wake of reports that detailed patterns of abuse from movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.

We’re grateful to Rapp for bravely telling his story. And here’s hoping he inspires others to shine more light on this issue.
