“House of Cards” is dealing with the demise of Frank Underwood by adding more ladies to the cast

With Claire Underwood (Robin Wright) finally in charge in the upcoming last season of House of Cards, things will look a little different — in the best way. And now, it sounds like the series’ star upgrade, prompted by Kevin Spacey being fired in November in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations, will be going even further by adding two movie stars to the D.C. drama mix. Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear have signed on to join the cast for Season 6.

Lane and Kinnear will play siblings on the show, but we don’t know many more details about how the two will fit into the House of Cards political universe. They will join series regulars Michael Kelly, Jayne Atkinson, Constance Zimmer (Janine is back!!), Derek Cecil, Patricia Clarkson, and others as the show wraps up. So far, we know the Spacey shake-up led to two completed Season 6 episodes and several scripts being scrapped.

Not to mention that all eyes will be on Claire when the show returns.

In the Michael Dobbs book that inspired the series, Spacey’s character dies, so we’re guessing Frank will be dealt with on the show in the same way…but that’s just a theory. Knowing the twists and turns House of Cards has taken over the years, the drama could really go anywhere.

By cutting ties with Spacey on House of Cards and other projects, Netflix reportedly lost $39 million, and ending the show entirely likely would have been a lot cheaper. But knowing what a powerhouse Wright is, we’re sure the streaming service is confident it made the right call in promoting her to star. Claire always stole the screen in her scenes, anyway — and the Season 5 finale did set her up to be in control.

Production kicks off this week for the sixth season’s eight episodes, but no return air date has been announced.
