Ah, so THIS is why you sleep so well in hotel beds

Staying at a hotel can provide you with wonderful things like room service, complimentary breakfasts, pools, and free WiFi. BUT, there is one hotel amenity that trumps them all: the bed.

Up until now, we thought that wizardry (and maybe just vacation lethargy) was behind the fact that we never want to leave a hotel bed, but it turns out that there’s more to it. (Although, we are still convinced that there’s magic involved.) Over at HuffPost, editors banded together to figure out exactly what makes hotel beds feel like the clouds that dreams are made of.

After comparing their experiences, they noticed one key similarity: the color white. Yes, when it comes to hotel beds, the best of the best are always white in color. Eureka!

Now it’s time for some color science (aka the best kind of science, in our humble opinion)…

The color white is symbolic of luxury. According to Think Brilliant, it also signifies cleanliness and purity. After all, who doesn’t want a hotel bed that is both clean and pure? Think about it. Have you ever stayed at a hotel where the duvet and sheets were purple, or orange, or green? They probably didn’t seem AS comfy, or aesthetically pleasing.

“Park Hyatt moved toward a clean, white bed and away from show pillows to present guests with a simple, clean and inviting place to lay their heads,” Hyatt spokesperson Sybil Pool explains. Another hotel chain – Westin and Sheraton – seconds this colorless approach:  “Visually, the idea of the white bed is important. Something about an all-white bed connotes luxury and a good night’s sleep,” says vice president of design Erin Hoover.

In the past, many hotels stayed away from white bedding because it wasn’t as easy to clean. Now, it seems that these locales want to go the extra mile to make guests feel like royalty. One thing’s for sure: we definitely aren’t complaining.

So next time you’re in the market for some new sheets, take a minimalistic approach. Bring your favorite hotel experiences home with you by making a simple, yet life-changing, color adjustment.
