Hot dog-flavored Pringles are now a thing, guys
If you love chips like we do, you know flavor innovations in the chip world have been a growing trend. While classic, simply salted potato chips still hold a place in our hearts, we must admit, offbeat chip flavors are fun: The added layer of discovery heightens the chip eating experience. Old standards like barbecue and sour cream and onion are great, but there’s always the allure of the unknown (or, if you’ve tried a strange flavor and liked it, there’s the appeal of the new favorite).
Popularizing this trend, Lays’ “Do Us A Flavor” contest takes flavor idea submissions from normal folks, actually creates four of the flavors, and crowns a winner — awarding the mastermind who created it a million dollars. The most recent crop of these chips included flavors like New York Rueben and Southern Biscuits and Gravy.
Now, Pringles has cranked things up a notch by creating a hot dog flavor, aptly named “Hot Diggity Dog.” According to Foodbeast, the flavor has been spotted at Walgreens stores; though 7-11 carries their own brand’s Big Bite Hot Dog potato chips, meant to taste like their — you guessed it — Big Bite hot dogs.
While we haven’t tried either brand’s hot dog chip offerings, we’re certainly intrigued by the new flavor. As Foodbeast cites, Pringles had long offered their Pizza flavor, which is in a similar vein — after all, both foods are customizable with toppings, but can only exist in one flavor as a chip. (Though we think it would be pretty great for Pringles to release a sub-line of customized Hot Diggity Dog chips, representing hot dogs with ketchup and mustard, hot dogs with sauerkraut, and, of course, an “everything” flavor.)
Pringles has also grown a reputation for their sweet flavors; last year, they debuted a milk chocolate flavor for the holidays, which joined other limited edition flavors like Pecan Pie and Cinnamon & Sugar.
As strange as a hot dog flavored chip may sound, we’ve grown pretty confident that they know what they’re doing. In fact, we may just swing by the nearest Walgreens to try them out ourselves.
