Put down your Honey Smacks immediately — they’ve been recalled for salmonella

Love eating cereal for breakfast? You might wanna check your pantry after this news. Kellogg’s is recalling Honey Smacks because of a salmonella risk, and if you want to make sure you’re safe, read on.

According to a report from the FDA, Kellogg’s has voluntarily recalled packages of its 15.3 and 23 oz. packages of Honey Smacks with UPC codes 3800039103 and 3800014810 and best-before dates between June 14th, 2018 and June 14th, 2019. Those products could potentially be tainted by salmonella, which could cause you to get seriously ill. We’re talking fever, nausea, and vomiting if you’re generally a healthy person, but it could be even worse for young children and the elderly. No matter what, it would not be fun.

Basically, if you don’t want to get salmonella, you should avoid Honey Smacks for now. Fortunately, the recall doesn’t affect any other Kellogg’s products, so cereals like Special K and Frosted Flakes are safe to continue eating.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has already cited 73 cases of salmonella in the outbreak, which has spread across 31 states. That’s a pretty big deal, so this is definitely something you’ll want to take seriously. The CDC advises that you throw away any Honey Smacks that are in your house right now, and avoid buying them until Kellogg’s gives the all-clear.

It’s definitely a bummer to get rid of your favorite cereal, but think on the bright side: You won’t get sick, and this gives you an opportunity to try new cereals you might not have otherwise. Plus, if you have a brand new, unopened box at home, all is not lost — most retailers will refund you if you bring it back with your receipt.

Stay safe out there. Salmonella is no joke!
