Homer Simpson might have discovered the ‘God Particle’

Wait, is Homer Simpson secretly a genius? According to Simon Singh, who wrote the 2013 book “The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets,” a 1998 episode of The Simpsons featured an equation that, when solved, gives a mass just a little larger than that of a Higgs Boson. Higgs Boson, FYI, is known as the “God Particle” and according to physicists could lead to a much better understanding of why and how the cosmos exists. For years, the equation has stumped scientists set out to prove the particle exists.

So yeah, Homer Simpson was featured writing out a version of the equation on a chalkboard—it was reportedly snuck into the episode by a writer whose friend was working on Higgs theory. Cut to 14 years later, when scientists discovered the key to the equation and proof of the particle. Homer? He had already pretty much figured it out. (Huffington Post)

Sexual assault on campuses continues to be a major issue, and one college is calling in  federal investigators for assistance. The president of Iowa’s Grinnell College has asked for a federal review of their handling of sexual assault charges on campus, after recent claims of mishandling reports by students.  “This is absolutely unprecedented,” Colby Bruno, a lawyer who represents college rape victims with the Victim Rights Law Center in Boston, told the Associated Press. “A big part of me wants to say, ‘Oh my gosh, this is terrific. This is a school that really wants to get ahead of the game and help its students.’ Then there is a side of me saying, ‘No one else has ever done this, so what are they doing?’ Something as unusual as this definitely throws up some red flags.” (AP)
