How holograms work — explained by Bill Nye + emojis

I don’t know about you guys, but my brain has a really hard time comprehending things like 3D printing and holograms. Like, I get that they’re real things that exist, but how they work makes no sense to me. Thankfully, Bill Nye our favorite Science Guy has got us covered. Together with General Electric’s #emojiscience project and Mashable, Bill Nye is back to explain the science of holograms by using emojis — a language most of us are very familiar with.

The video was released in time for Star Wars Day (May the 4th be with you), which is why Bill Nye uses Princess Leia from the original Star Wars as a hologram example to explain why we don’t yet have fully three-dimensional holograms. He uses emojis to illustrate all of the hologram concepts — one emoji in particular plays the role of Princess Leia (portrayed by emoji girl raising one hand along with two emoji donuts on either side of her head — obviously acting as Princess Leia buns).

Crossing fingers and toes that O-Bill-Nye Kenobi will continue his involvement with the #emojiscience project. After all, holograms certainly aren’t the only confusing science concepts that could really use emojis as a helpful explanation tool.
