Hollywood’s most iconic actresses star in most natural and raw Pirelli calendar yet
Nothing goes together like women and tires, right? Pirelli, the Italian tire company, paired the two over forty years ago, in a calendar that has since become an iconic initiative in the fashion industry.
But last year, Annie Leibovitz came on board as photographer, and turned the focus from nude, anonymous models to women whose lives and creative works inspire.
This year, for the 44th edition, photographer Peter Lindbergh has taken the helm, and seems to be following in Leibovitz’s stead.
All of the shots are un-retouched, showing Julianne Moore, Robin Wright, Nicole Kidman and Uma Thurman with a depth and realness that goes beyond the physical.
This year’s Pirelli calendar features women of various ages including Helen Mirren, 71, Charlotte Rampling, 70, Rooney Mara, 31, and Lupita Nyong’o, 33.
Lindbergh titled the images “Emotional.”
“[T]his calendar was symbolic in a lot of ways,” Uma Thurman told Vanity Fair.
One photo of Kate Winslet features just her hands, which Lindberg calls a natural mark of beauty.
“The point was just to show one woman everybody knows [a certain way;] how they really are,” he said.
Amazing how the concept of portraying women as themselves, as how they really are, is still a bold move.
Maybe one day, this is how women will always be portrayed. Real. Flawed.
