Sisterhood Matters: Hollywood’s Coolest and Most Lovable Sister-Duos

Los Angeles is not for the faint of heart, but if you try to make it there, you better have a strong support system. Friends can be a big help during difficult times, and while I consider my closest lady buds to be family, I know firsthand there’s something amazing about the love and understanding of a sister.

The women below have all chosen to work in the crazy entertainment world, and luckily their sisters joined them for the ride. It’s not always easy, but these siblings can lean on each other professionally and personally because they know how insane showbiz (and life!) can be. Best of all, they prioritize each other above work and never let the fame monster get in the way of their unconditional love. Here are some of Hollywood’s most kickass sisters.

Vera and Taissa Farmiga

Many know Taissa from The Bling Ring and her work on American Horror Story, and Vera stars in A&E’s Bates MotelThere’s a 21-year age gap between these two actresses, but they’re very close. “We’re best friends, but I like to think I’ve parented her in a way, too,” Vera has said. “Taissa is the person you take with you to choose your Oscar gown and then take to In-N-Out Burger. As much of an age difference as there is, she is one of my best friends in the world.” Vera also inspired her little sis to start performing. Taissa told Teen Vogue a few years ago, “Acting had always been Vera’s thing. I never thought it would be mine.” Now they can share it!

Zooey and Emily Deschanel

The Deschanel sweethearts grew up in a showbiz household, with their mother appearing in Twin Peaks and father serving as a director and cinematographer. The girls carved out amazing acting careers for themselves and are very close these days, and when Zooey guest starred on Bones a while back, she said, “Emily was extremely welcoming and accommodating and very sweet. It ended up being really fun. I was glad I did it.” As children, they experienced standard sibling rivalry, with Emily claiming to be “Neptunian” and threatening little Zooey, but they can laugh about it now with Conan O’Brien

Dakota and Elle Fanning

It’s impossible not to be charmed by these blond cutiepies! Dakota’s career started very early in life, paving the way for chipper, fresh-faced Elle to follow in the same footsteps. They’ve both done amazing work in film and perhaps they’ll collaborate someday.

Rooney and Kate Mara

These ladies know how to land sophisticated gigs. Kate Mara is famous for portraying Zoe Barnes in Netflix’s explosively popular House of Cards and Rooney appeared in Oscar-nominated films Her and The Social Network. She was also in the creepy 2013 thriller Side Effects. It’s tough when one family member seems to be doing better than another career-wise, but that’s not an issue for the talented Mara girls. They also know family is more important than anything else. Kate said in an interview last month, “[L]uckily my sister and I know that, while it may be both of our passions, it is just a job at the end of the day. It’s not the most important thing to either of us. It’s quite surreal that we both are so lucky in the success of it all.”

The Olsens

While the Olsen twins dominated our childhood with their money-making franchise, their little sister Lizzie was living a relatively low-key life on the sidelines. Now that her twin sisters are focusing on the fashion world, she’s giving acting a try and has gotten some pretty awesome roles in movies like Josh Radnor’s Liberal Arts, Martha Marcy Mae Marlene and Silent House. Her sisters have given her some constructive advice over the years as well: “It’s just to be you and not to get caught up in anything else. I mean this is all fun, and I guess you have to do this, but it’s also really amazing that you get to do it.”

Hilary and Haylie Duff

These girls have publicly discussed their closeness for years, and they even did a movie together in 2006. Hilary congratulated Haylie on her engagement last month, and Hilary once said Haylie inspired her to pursue entertainment, “I always wanted to be like my older sister Haylie. When she learned to ride a bike, I had to as well. If she took ballet lessons, I did too. I took singing lessons because she did. It all just got more intense until it turned into careers for both of us.”
