Hold up, Steve from “Stranger Things” was supposed to be monster bait not Barb

In an interview with USA Today, Finn Wolfhard (who plays Mike) revealed that one of the Demogorgon victims was originally supposed to be none other than Nancy’s boyfriend, Steve, but the writers changed their plan as the series developed.

Steve (Joe Keery), “was originally supposed to be the monster bait, but then they were like, ‘Hey, Joe’s really likable — let’s keep him and kill Barb. It was one of those things they wrote in just to move the story along, but now that she’s stuck so well, they have to bring her back.”

So… Barb was never meant to be killed by the Demogorgon originally? Because Steve was more likeable than Barb?? Mmkay.

While we can’t help but think that Barb is sadly gone for good (because I’m not sure how you can bring back someone who is so clearly dead), Caleb McLaughlin (who plays Lucas), told USA Today that he thinks Barb will be shown in flashbacks. Barb might even be given a memorial in town – that is, if her body is ever recovered from the Upside Down and she can be confirmed as dead. There’s always the longshot hope that she *could* come back, but Eleven’s resounding ‘gone’ and the grisly appearance of a slug crawling out of Barb’s mouth would certainly require a lot of explaining. Then again, the rules of the Upside Down world seem very different than our own. There’s also the possibility that Barb could be serving as a hatchery for more Upside Down creatures… or even turn into one herself (yikes!). Either way, we can’t help but feel a pang when we hear that poor Barb wasn’t initially slotted for a demise.
