Hobbit Holes, And Other Fun Pop Culture Projects

The great J.R.R Tolkein once wrote that “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.”

Rocy and Melissa Pillsbury started the best business ever. Their company, Wooden Wonders, creates “Hobbit Holes” that can make everyone feel like personal acquaintances of Bilbo Baggins, while surrounding them with the comfort that Tolkein had depicted. Their creations may be constructed above ground, but it’s the thought and creativity that counts.

“The portrayal of the Hobbit house was just real cool,” Rocy said in an interview about his business. “It was a house under the ground, with a round door, beautiful concept, beautiful architecture.” The homes range from chicken coops to playhouses, and cost anywhere between $995 to $2,225 based on size. They’re pricey – but they’re constructed similarly to a standard home.

While these holes are pretty darn incredible, they’re not the first DIY project based on popular literature, television and film. Here are a few others that we truly love.

1. DIY Iron Throne, from Game of Thrones

If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, and can’t be bothered by normal chairs, this might be the project for you! It’s simple, yet pretty time-consuming. But your payoff for your hard work is an Iron Throne, so it’s totally worth it. This project involes foam, metal, paint, a wood base, and a standard lawn chair.

2. Bluth’s Frozen Banana Stand – As A Cat Bed, from Arrested Development

This picture was brought to us by a Redditor. And as we all know from Tom Haverford, “Reddit is great because it has all the important links.” Thankfully, the construction seems pretty simple. Do you have cardboard, as well as a cat bed that your cat is actually fond of sleeping in? Get to work! I’m sure that when it’s completed, your kitty will be a better banana stand employee than Maeby could ever dream of being.

 3. Pawnee Goddesses Uniform, from Parks & Recreation

Speaking of Tom Haverford, let’s talk about Parks & Rec. We can’t forget the episode where Leslie tries to outshine the boys in a Goddesses v. Rangers throwdown. This would be a fantastic Halloween costume, or just something fun to wear around the house. If you’re alone, you won’t have to answer anyone’s questions. You’ll need a shirt, some yellow stars, patches of your choosing, and of course – a sewing machine, to stitch it all together.

4. Louise’s Bunny Hat from Bob’s Burgers

We know that Louise Belcher only feels complete with her ears. If you feel the same way, you can easily make your own pair at home that will be equally cute. You’ll need some pink felt, freezer paper, and the typical items necessary to create your own clothes. Sure, you probably have measuring tape in your house – you just need to remember which drawer you shoved it in.

5. Homer’s Dream Car from The Simpsons

I don’t want to put a damper on your dreams, but this one is a bit more difficult than the four I’ve listed above. And by “a bit more”, I mean “you need to have a lot of money, and mechanical skills”. In other words, pink felt isn’t necessary. However, someone did build Homer’s Dream Car, and it went viral. This all stems from the episode where Homer meets his long-lost brother, who works in the automobile industry and trusts Homer to design a car for the average American. Of course, it’s a massive (yet hilarious) bust. Props for including a Bort license plate. Because every place I’ve been to has been sold out of Bort license plates.

Can you think of any more creative pop culture DIY projects? We’d love to hear about them!
