Hillary Clinton’s first TV ad is all about her mom

Hillary Clinton is known to be a champion for women, but in her first two campaign TV ads, she’s championing one woman in particular: her mother, Dorothy Rodham.

The Clinton Campaign released two, one-minute videos via Twitter Sunday night that will begin airing in New Hampshire and Iowa for a five-week stint. While it’s not really big news for a candidate to release ads, these two are special because they focus on Dorothy’s story of hardship rather than explicitly Clinton’s political agenda.

In the first video, titled “Dorothy,” (shown below) Clinton recounts how her mother was abandoned at age 8 and was forced into domestic work by 14. Her mom’s story is difficult but it’s also a story that many Americans understand well. As Clinton says, “I think about all the Dorothys all over America who fight for their families, who never give up. That’s why I’m doing this. That’s why I’ve always done this. For all the Dorothys.”

The second ad, “Family Strong” continues to focus on her mother’s hardships, but it also includes a run down of the candidate’s resume, including a heart-exploding picture of Clinton with Bill Clinton and baby granddaughter, Charlotte. The video (below) reminds viewers that Clinton started out in the Children’s Defense Fund and went to work for Obama, whom the video calls, “the man that defeated her.”

The ads ask constituents to really consider Clinton as a human and not just a political powerhouse. ABC News cites campaign manager Robby Mook, saying, “We’re going to make sure everyone knows who Hillary Clinton really is — who she fights for and what has motivated her lifelong commitment to children and families.” Mook said in a statement, “Since Day One, we’ve planned for a competitive primary with Hillary herself working to earn every vote and, ultimately, the nomination. This is the natural next step.”

The race to the White House is well underway.
