Some hilarious on-screen references to ginger ale, because why not?
Ginger ale, the fizzy, spicy, fragrant, and golden-colored soft drink that grandma and grandpa (probably) prefer, is in serious need of some rebranding and revamping. I mean, it’s so yummy! I didn’t even know how delicious it was until I tried it, and now it’s the only soda I’ll drink.
Ginger ale is pretty old-school. When you think “ginger ale,” you probably think of those funny Canada Dry commercials where they pull the ginger out of the ground or have a two-way hold on the bottle and the plant, right? Well, ginger ale isn’t just about that. It’s ginger ale. Ginger ale is cool and it’s delicious, and I drink it, and therefore it needs an updated image. Which is why I’ve made this kick-ass list of TV and film references to ginger ale and all its glory. I also want you to know that I’m not THE ONLY one obsessing over the perfection that is ginger ale. Here are a bunch of fictional characters who are just as head-over-heels (if not more) with the spicy-sweet drink.
1. Fringe

The prime example of ginger ale in TV is in J.J. Abram’s wicked awesome show, Fringe. This is just one of Dr. Walter Bishop’s many food cravings which range from blueberry pancakes to blue cotton candy (not pink). In the first episode, Agent Dunham and his son Peter get him out of an insane asylum. While inspecting a dead body, Walter says, “Is that ginger ale? I need some ginger ale. I haven’t had some in a long time.” The tension is high, people are dying, and Walter wants a ginger ale. Really? This show is the best.
2. Seinfeld
Have you ever ordered ginger ale that you think may not really be ginger ale? I know it sounds like The Matrix or something, but sometimes your waiter or waitress can pull a fast one on you and just add a bit of Coke to a full glass of Sprite and call it ginger ale. Oh the humanity! This clip, featuring our favorite balding buddy George Costanza, showcases this predicament and it comes off in quintessential George fashion.
3. Family Guy
Family Guy can be a bit crude, but it can also be just downright funny. Ginger ale in Family Guy? Why, yes, my young padawan, there is a reference to the tasty beverage in this show. In fact, creepy sleaze-master Bruce says to Brian and then the bartender at the beginning of the episode: “I like everything, including ginger ale. [To the bartender] Pssst, that’s my way of ordering a ginger ale.”
4. Drake and Josh
You probably watched this show in middle school (admit it —you loved it). You probably had a crush on Drake and a secret crush on Josh. Anyway, in the season four episode entitled, “Eric Punches Drake,” Josh gets fired up at Mindy’s new boyfriend, Chad, at the movie theater. Basically, Josh has a fit because Chad says, “I’m out of ginger ale. Hey, do you guys have free refills on the ginger ale?” In response, Josh basically has a meltdown. Over ginger ale. And jealousy, but mostly the ginger ale.
5. Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory

Gene Wilder’s Willy Wonka makes a wacky reference to ginger ale when describing what his Wonka-mobile runs on: he says it’s fueled with “ginger ale, ginger pop, ginger beer, beer bubbles, bubbleade, bubblecola, double cola, double-bubble-burple-cola, and all the crazy carbonated stuff that tickles your nose. Few people realize what tremendous power there is in one of those things.” Why is this awesomely hilarious? While Wonka, Charlie, Grandpa Joe, Mike TV, and his mom ride in this ginger ale car, the carbonation engulfs them in a nice sticky foam, but there’s a magic car wash at the end of the track. And, while they’re in the car, Wonka sings his heart out, and it’s just the best.
Step aside cola, ginger ale is here, and it’s going to shove you out of the spotlight.
