Hijabi women are finally getting their own emoji
Smartphones are (finally) getting a woman-in-hijab emoji.
Unicode, the company who designs the emoji keyboards on our phones, announced Unicode 10.0 will include a woman wearing a headscarf — thanks to a campaign organized by 15-year-old Rayouf Alhumedhi. Users will also have the option to select the headscarf as a loose piece of clothing, or in “ghost” mode with an invisible face.
The company has been working to make the emoji keyboard more diverse in recent updates, including making various skin colors available and adding more emojis of working women.
As such, an emoji to represent hijabi women was certainly long overdue.
Officials with Unicode haven’t said when 10.0 will be released. We’re still waiting on Unicode 9.0, which will bring us an avocado, a shrug, and a facepalm emoji. As excited as we are to have an emoji to Instagram alongside our avocado toast, we definitely think the hijabi woman emoji should take priority.
Regardless, we’re happy to see more diversity on the emoji keyboard!
