A map of the best movies based in every single US state
Earlier this week, Reddit user “Undeniably_Awesome” did an undeniably awesome thing: he (or she) posted a glorious map of the highest-rated films that take place in each state. The map was informative and a lot of fun — and a wonderful reminder that great movies can happen in unexpected places.
Of all the films, 29 were in IMDb’s Top 250. As Mic pointed out, the highest-rated film on the list was Maine’s The Shawshank Redemption, which is #1 on IMDb overall; closely followed by New York’s The Godfather, which is #2 overall, and California’s Pulp Fiction, which is #5 overall. (Conversely, after doing some searching, we found that the lowest-rated film was My Own Private Idaho — so if you’re looking to be the best a state has to offer, your best bet is setting your blockbuster there.)
Overall, it was a diverse group of films. Some of the movies were surprising, and some less so; and the release dates ranged from 1925 (what’s up, Charlie Chaplin?) to 2013. Mic also pointed out that three of the films featured the state’s name in the title (Nebraska, My Own Private Idaho, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington), perhaps making them obvious choices.
Check out the map for yourself below, and let us know if you think there are better films that take place in your home state. And to clarify, these aren’t the most popular movies in each state, although there’s probably some overlap for at least a few of them. (Looking at you, Fargo.)
