“Hidden Figures” is having a special screening at the White House thanks to Michelle Obama
Michelle Obama is an incredible role model. And she knows an important story when she sees one. That’s why she’s having a special screening of Hidden Figures at the White House. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Obama saw an advanced screening of the film. And she was so moved by it and the story it tells, she decided to bring it to the White House. There, she’ll be joined by many special guests and give remarks afterwards.
Hidden Figures tells the story of three African-American women whose calculations helped send John Glenn to space.
The movie shares the outstanding contributions of each previously unrecognized woman.
Obama advocated a great deal for women and girl’s rights during her husband’s presidency. As the couple winds down their time in office, the First Lady continues to create opportunities to have women’s stories heard in the public eye.
This story is an especially powerful one considering these African-American women worked in a male-dominated industry during a racially charged time in America’s history.
Katherine Johnson, one of the women portrayed in the film, will attend the White House special screening alongside Obama. And the three main actresses, Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae, will also be at the event, along with their co-star, Kevin Costner.
The Obamas recognized the outstanding achievements of these women before. Recently, President Obama awarded Katherine Johnson the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her work with NASA.
