Behold! If fashion ads replaced models with all our real-life heroes
We all got SUPER excited at the start of this year when our idol Joan Didion became the face of Celine and our other idol Joni Mitchell became the face of YSL. It was like, for the first time ever, high fashion UNDERSTOOD us, they knew that we were much more likely to get excited about women who have made their indelible mark on history than the typical high fashion models that tend to populate the pages of Vogue. Nothing against fashion models, I’m sure they’re lovely and wonderful people, but who would you rather have lunch with, a person who’s awesome at posing or Joni and Joan? That’s what I thought.
Like us, Elisa Rodríguez-Vila over at Fusion was really feeling this whole “Intellectual and Artistic Idols as Fashion Models” trend, and so she took matters into her own hands, and mocked up some high fashion ads featuring some of her (and our!!!)favorites.
As Rodríguez-Vila explains in her Fusion piece “What if all the major fashion brands ditched supermodels and hired superwomen instead?”:
“Since the fashion world is ringing in 2015 in a risk-taking mood, I thought it would be a perfect moment to make some model casting suggestions — women who aren’t Gisele or Kendall. Season after season, we see the same group of models and celebrities posing for brands over and over, in a fashion Groundhog Day. The crazy idea of casting women who don’t fit the supermodel mold — yet are super heroes in real life — is actually not that crazy at all. Choosing these women wouldn’t be a risk, it would be a sure-fire hit.”
Check it below:
Ruth Bader Ginsburg for Chanel:
Laverne Cox for Versace:
Mo’Ne Davis for Celine:
And, maybe my favorite, Malala for Louis Vuitton:
I’m feeling this so hard, you guys. The one thing I will say is, if super women do start modeling for major fashion brands, I’m all of a sudden going to be, like, a zillion times more likely to want to spend all my rent on shoes. How will I be able to resist the charms of Malala? So maybe it’s safer for my bank account if all my idols don’t take over the pages of fashion magazines. Also, they’re pretty busy with other stuff.
