Here’s the new trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s new Netflix show, “The Get Down”

There’s been a lot of buzz surrounding Baz Luhrmann’s new Netflix series The Get Down. Likely because it’s going to be incredible.

In typical Luhrmann fashion (i.e. Moulin Rouge, Romeo and Juliet, etc.), it’s a music-driven drama, which blends disco, punk and hip-hop to tell the story of a group of South Bronx kids in the late 1970s when the city was on the brink of bankruptcy.

“The overview of this thing is that New York is in chaos,” supervising producer Nelson George told EW. “Symbolically, disco and hip-hop are kind of at war with each other.”

Here’s the full description from Netflix:

“The Get Down focuses on 1970s New York — broken down and beaten up, violent, cash strapped — dying. Consigned to rubble, a rag-tag crew of South Bronx teenagers are nothings and nobodies with no one to shelter them — except each other, armed only with verbal games, improvised dance steps, some magic markers and spray cans. From Bronx tenements, to the SoHo art scene; from CBGB to Studio 54 and even the glass towers of the just-built World Trade Center, The Get Down is a mythic saga of how New York at the brink of bankruptcy gave birth to hip-hop, punk and disco — as told through the lives and music of the South Bronx kids who changed the city and the world…forever.”

The trailer is set to an original song by Nas, who is an executive producer on the show and someone that Luhrmann has said was a “huge creative force.”

The cast includes Jaden Smith, Justice Smith, Herizen Guardiola, Shameik Moore, Jimmy Smits and Giancarlo Esposito.

The first half of The Get Down debuts on Netflix on August 12th, but we’ll have to wait until 2017 to see the second half.
